Gyeongju’s Starry Secret: Why You Should Visit Cheomseongdae Observatory
If you’re visiting Gyeongju — Korea’s ancient capital — you’ll probably hear about Bulguksa Temple or the royal tombs. But one place that should absolutely be on your itinerary is Cheomseongdae (첨성대) — the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia and one of Korea’s national treasures.
🏛 A Glimpse into the Stars of the Silla Kingdom
Cheomseongdae was built during the reign of Queen Seondeok in the 7th century (around 632–647 AD). From afar, it might look like just an old stone tower, but it's full of symbolism. It’s made of 362 granite stones, thought to represent the 362 days of the lunar year, and its shape — wider at the base and narrowing towards the top — resembles a bottle or telescope. Pretty cool for something that’s over 1,300 years old!
When you stand in front of Cheomseongdae, it’s easy to imagine ancient astronomers climbing up inside to study the stars. In fact, it’s believed that the tower was used not just to observe the night sky, but also to determine the timing of agricultural seasons and festivals. The name "Cheomseongdae" literally means "Star-Gazing Tower."
🌳 A Peaceful Spot in the Heart of History
The tower is located inside Wolseong Park, a scenic area filled with flowers, walking paths, and even a royal palace site under excavation. It’s perfect for a daytime walk or even a romantic sunset stroll. During spring, the area around Cheomseongdae bursts with yellow canola flowers — a stunning photo opportunity.
At night, Cheomseongdae is beautifully lit up, giving it a mystical glow. Many tourists (and couples!) come in the evening just to enjoy the calm atmosphere and take photos.
